The more modern file format is based on Unicode encoding and removes the file size limit and can reach a maximum size of 50GB. ANSI encoded PST files are generally older file formats, supported by Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier versions - these files have a maximum size limit of 2GB and do not support Unicode. PST file formats have two types which are based on the encoding. PST files are used for archiving email data offline that can be later loaded and viewed in various applications. A Personal Storage Table (.pst) is a file that is used to store copies of messages, calendar events, and other items within Microsoft software such as Microsoft Exchange Client, Windows Messaging, and Microsoft Outlook.
